Language Arts
Throughout the year, my goal is for every student to become a lifelong reader, and for each student to find value in reading. In order to reach this goal, students will be provided with an abundance of choice during reading. Over the course of the year, students will keep a reader's notebook to track all the books they're reading. They will also participate in book clubs and literature circles with small groups determined by their interests. In order to assess students, I will be conferencing with each student either individually or with their small group.
Our writing will help supplement our reading. For example: during our memoir unit, students will select several memoirs to read and learn the components of memoirs. Over the course of many discussions about these books, students will then use the same components they discovery through their reading to write a memoir of their own.

Writers' Workshop
This has an abundance of good ideas for creating a writing workshop in a lower elementary classroom. It provides examples of mini lessons on content, procedures and process. Also provided are planning sheets and sample calendars.
