Social Studies
Within this subject area, there are many topics that are unfamiliar to the students; because of this it becomes difficult to get students engaged in the information. It's important for students to connect with the material they're learning. If they're able to connect the material with relevant experiences in their own life, they'll be able to develop a deeper understanding of the content. In the classroom, it's very beneficial to the students to have interactive and hands-on activities with Social Studies.
Our goal within Social Studies is to learn the fifth grade curriculum, but in a way that students will be able to apply the material to their own lives and grow as a citizen. Students will be able to analyze public issues and evaluate the impact on their own lives and on their community.
To assess Social Studies, students will be given options at the end of every unit - written test, project or presentation. Students will be able to choose individually the most effective way to show what they've learned.
